Born in Alabama but I moved ok
I always had roof, bellyful of food, and I stayed in school
But that's a rarity in my state ok
'Cause all my friends I can name grew up on section 8
And EBT put food on their plates ok
I may have never scrape but a lot of them can't
Say skippin' dinner wasn't commonplace ok
Shit they probably wouldn't ate if it weren't for the state
Or school lunch wasn't served every day ok
Their parents weren't in one place family in bad shape
Shit some were even wards of the state ok
Good kids how I saw 'em but in school they had problems
Getting paddled by the teacher just for talkin' ok
This environment they're brought in is what I'm now calling
Growing up in poverty in the pelican state

There are more babies dying after they're born in this region

There's a slew of colleges but graduates aren't following

No jobs for the people only Wal-Mart and casinos
We ain't touching hundreds barely seeing singles ok
They wanna drill more off shore they say jobs it'll make
But that's fake; Poverty in the Pelican State
